Production[]
Development[]
In March 2009, a film based a live-action feature based on the vintage Mattel action figure Major Matt Mason was announced to be in development with Universal Pictures. Tom Hanks was set to star in the film while also co-writing a script with Graham Yost. Hanks was announced to also produce the film alongside Gary Goetzman. Mattel executives Tim Kilpin and Barry Waldo were set to executive produce the film.[1] In 2011, the film was set with a tentative budget of $100 million.[2] That same year, it was reported that Robert Zemeckis was in talks to direct the film. In 2012, Yost revealed more about the film's plot indicating that it was about Mason, an astronaut trapped on a moon base with a group of people. The story is one of survival, as the film won’t feature any aliens or antagonists.[3][4][5]
On September 7, 2019, Paramount Pictures acquired the film and Akiva Goldsman producing with Hanks and writing a script based on Michael Chabon's short story about Mason.[6]
